Since 1953, the Preservation Society of Charleston (PSC) has celebrated the very best of preservation in Charleston and the Lowcountry through the Carolopolis Award program. After nearly 70 years and more than 1,400 awards given, the Carolopolis Award has become as much a part of the fabric of the city as the buildings and structures it honors.”

1687 Fort Lamar Road
Built circa 1837, Secessionville Manor is a vernacular raised plantation style house designed in the Greek Revival style and defined by its unique U-shaped piazza with classical, square, fluted columns. The house was likely designed and built by Edward H. Freer, the only skilled carpenter living on James Island at the time, as a summer residence for cotton planter, Rawlins Rivers.
The highlight of the 2017-2019 rehabilitation project was the removal of inappropriate infill at bays below the porch, as well as the refenestration of the remaining infilled bays to reflect a more appropriate treatment. Also of note was the replacement of the non-historic 1/1 window within the gable with an elegant fanlight window. Other historic fabric including windows, doors, siding, trim, and roofing were repaired or replaced in-kind, and the porch structure was stabilized by repointing masonry piers, sistering historic frame members, and realigning skewed columns.”

55 East Bay Street
The Jonathan Simpson House at 55 East Bay Street and the original brick kitchen building to the rear were constructed in the early 1780s for British shipping merchant Jonathan Simpson. The kitchen house was renovated as a separate residence in the mid-twentieth century, and in 1965, the main house at 55 East Bay was awarded an exterior Carolopolis Award.
As part of this rehabilitation project, a condominium regime subdividing the main house and kitchen house into separate dwelling units was abandoned and the property was returned to a single-family residence. A 1980s stucco over frame kitchen addition at the rear of the main house was removed and a one-story glazed hyphen with copper cladding was introduced between the main house and the dependency. Three original openings on the south wall of the kitchen house were restored and new mahogany windows and doors replaced non-historic units.“
